Energy

I often find myself inspired to pray or connect with God when I listen to dance music. The music is often really catchy, but more than that, the lyrics are deceptive in their simplicity. Sometimes they capture something that seems obvious but needs pondering.

The dance act Disclosure have a new song out called “Energy”. There is a really important lyric in it which states, “Where your focus goes, your energy flows.”

It seems obvious, but its worth stating that life is limited. We have a limited number of days on this planet, each day a finite number of hours, we have a personal resource of energy that runs out each day.

So where are you placing your focus? What are you spending your energy on? Yesterday between waking and sleep you spent your energy. Are you pleased with how you used it?

Let us go to God in prayer.

Heavenly Parent, for that person who is focused on all that is wrong in their life, we lift them up before you in prayer. May their focus soften and shift, may they focus not just on that which is negative, may they start to see the beauty that surrounds them too. Amongst all the thorns is a rose. By focusing on that which is positive may their energy flow there and may it grow and increase and begin to outweigh all the negatives in their life.

So many of us walk through life consumed with all that seems to be wrong, when someone asks how we are the most we manage is “Not bad”. May we become a people who say “I’m wonderful, I’m joyful, I’m blessed and abundant.”

Holy Spirit for that person focused on what everyone else has, may today be the day that they take a break from comparison. Someone will always have a bigger house, a better job, a nicer car, but is that where we want to spend our energy? What service is done in Your name constantly trying to keep up? Only when we acknowledge that everything you have given us is already enough will we truly feel abundance.

Through that abundance we can find a place to give graciously to others. Isn’t that where we want our energy to be today, giving to others rather than staring at the supposed riches of those around us.

Jesus may that person focusing on their weakness today focus on their strength. For that person focusing on their fears, may the put energy in to trying something new, may they be bold, may they be brave.

Jesus, we your people have been called to do your work, that is how we should spend our energy. Many of us are seeking clarity, what does your work look like for us? Speak to us Jesus, show us where our focus needs to be today.

This prayer is just a moment in our life with Christ. We are called each day to do his work and there is so much work to do. Luckily each of us is unique and special with specific gifts. Each of us has different work to do in Christ’s name.

We pray now, God, that you allow us to focus on that which we can do, that which we are called to do. Bring us clarity Lord, as to how our gifts and skills will best serve others. This week our focus will be on others, our energy spent on others. Lord Jesus, empower us to be a blessing to others.

Remind us daily that where our focus goes, our energy flows.

Amen.
